Want a versatile and beautiful way to organize your children’s bedroom? You can easily turn wooden crates into floating shelves and baskets for all of their games, toys, books, pictures, dolls, and art supplies. This was one of my favorite DIY projects. My daughter had fun putting her spin on it too.
First, I used paint we used on their castle bunk bed. We had a local craftsman build the girls castle bed and it came natural. We used pink, black, and white paint (so far) for this bed. Although there are hints of turquoise in their “puppy” themed bedroom, we left the turquoise out.
So materials I gathered were:
- wooden crates
- paint brushes
- pink and white paint
- chalkboard paint
- drop cloth
- Sand down any rough parts of the crates. As I bought these crates wholesale, some were not perfectly smooth as others.
- For the first 2 crates, we went all pink (or purple, depending on the lighting). I let my five-year-old daughter go crazy and put her touch on these crates. Being a bit OCD, I did the second coat after she went to bed that night.
- For the second two crates, I painted white on the inside and chalkboard paint on the outside. Sooo easy!
They are functional and beautiful. Most importantly, the girls love them!
