Crafting

The night before my nephew’s first birthday, I was asked to make him a hat for his “smash cake” photo session. What? I had to Google that one to see what that even meant.

After watching a few tutorials and scrambling for material around my brother’s house, this is what I came up with. I didn’t think it turned out that bad. At least not as bad as the photo session. I’ve actually had people ask me how to make it, so here it is.

Gather your supply list. Like I mentioned, these were things I found at eleven thirty that night.

  • glue gun or tape
  • scissors
  • string or ribbon
  • card stock paper
  • white rope/ribbon or any decorative things you can find
  • mustache came from cupcake toppers
  • razor blade or knife

  1. First print out your party hat template on bright white paper. Then cut along the borders.
  2. Fold along the grey line on the left side of your template.
  3. Use your utility knife to cut a slit along the grey line on the right side of your cone.
  4. Wrap your cone, tuck the slit inside the cut, and glue the seam together.
  5. For the pompom, I cut a few pieces of rope and trimmed the frails to make them even. Tuck them inside and use a hot glue gun to keep it in tacked.
  6. I used the same rope (remember, I was limited on supplies) to glue around the bottom of the cone/hat.
  7. Add any of your decorations. Ex: glitter, jewels, stickers, string. I simply printed a template of the number 1 and a circle, and cut it with the razor blade. Then I took one of the cupcake toppers and glued it onto the hat.
  8. I glued on some string and made adjustments to fit my nephew’s head.

All done.
